What is Oculus Rift?
Oculus VR is a virtual reality technology company, founded in 2012 by Palmer Luckey and Brendan Iribe. The company’s first product is immersive virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display – Oculus Rift.
Its first prototype was demonstrated in 2012 at Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), which was a huge success. Shortly after Oculus VR announced its Kickstarter campaign for Oculus Rift, which secured $250,000 within the first four hours and eventually ended with $2,437,429.
“Oculus is a developer of virtual reality hardware for the enthusiast market. Other companies focus on research institutions, military contracts, and large companies as customers, but our mission is to put high performance, low cost, open-sourced virtual reality in the hands of homebrewers, experimenters, and gamers. “ – says Palmer Luckey.
In March 2014, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook intended to acquire Oculus VR; the deal closed in July 2014.
Oculus Rift games
Oculus Rift is getting the most support from VR game developers, but most of them still aren’t working on any VR games. Therefore, the company decided to invest $10m to help independent developers to create games for VR headset and announced that there will be plenty of compatible games when it comes out.
With the Oculus Rift announcing the final consumer version of its VR Headset, we now know some of the very first games we will be able to play. Launch titles include sci-fi flight simulator Eve Valkyrie, VR Sports Challenge, atmospheric RPG Chronos, Damage Core, Esper, Lucky’s Tale and Edge of Nowhere, arctic survival game.

In March 2014, Oculus announced the Devkit 2 (DK2), which you could pick up online for around £400 online, with the official price being $350.
Oculus CEO Palmer Luckey hinted, that the consumer version of Oculus Rift may cost more than $350. When asked about it, he responded: “You know, I’m going to be perfectly honest with you. We’re roughly in that ballpark… but it’s going to cost more than that.”
We now know that the consumer version is available for $599, which is £410, but that doesn’t include tax or shipping. In the UK, the Rift is going for £499 (roughly $729), and €699 (about $752) across Europe.
